Doggy evaluation day at Eager park.

Hopkins Hounds is always looking for dogs and their pet parents who are willing to volunteer their time to support the well-being of our Johns Hopkins community!

Emotional support dogs don’t require any training but we like to see that they can perform specific tasks like listening to basic commands and remaining calm in any environment. We also evaluate all dogs to ensure they don’t pose a threat to the safety of others.

How Does it Work?

Set up an appointment for your dog by contacting [email protected]. During your visit we will do a series of tests to observe your dogs behavior. The following questions will be used as part of the assessment.

  • Does your dog tolerate small children poking them in the eyes?
  • Does your dog knock people over when they greet them?
  • How often does your dog demand belly rubs?
  • If your dog were left alone in a room with a cheeseburger, would they eat it?
  • How does your dog react to loud noises?
  • How does your dog respond when being pet by strangers?

If your dog does not meet the requirements don’t worry! We have partnered with some excellent doggy training programs that will help get your pup prepared in no time.

Once your dog is inducted into the program we will provide you with some resources to prepare for your first outing. Most visits are approximately 1 hour and will take place anywhere from homes and offices to clinical settings. Contact us if you have any additional questions or register your dog to get started!

Frequently Asked Questions

What type of breeds are allowed to join the program?

We accept all breeds as long as they pass our evaluation appointment. Our main goal is to ensure the safety of everyone involved.

Are there any age limitations?

There is no age limit but we want your dog to be in good health.

Does my dog need training?

Training is not a requirement to become an emotional support dog but if your furry friend doesn’t meet the evaluation requirements that are outlined above then we may recommend one of our partner training programs.

Where do visits take place?

We mainly serve the home, home office, and administrative and clinical workplaces but any where there is a human in need of a wagging tail and slobbery kisses we will venture to.
